Course Introduction
The Small Church
Do you ever wonder what is the place of the small church in God’s plan? Far too often small churches are overlooked because of their size. The truth is that there are thousands of small churches across Canada and a significant percentage of Christians attend them.
The Bible has a great deal to say about the church all of which is just as applicable to the small church as to any other size. As we gain a new biblical understanding of the church. we realize that size is not what determines a church’s worth.
Fifty percent of all evangelical churches in Canada have fewer than fifty people
attending on a Sunday morning. Seventy-five percent have fewer than 150. That means that the majority of churches are small. While small, those churches form an important part of the church mosaic in Canada. They are all part of the body of Christ and as such play an important role in what God is doing in this country.
Small Churches in Canada
For the past half century church leaders have told us that the sign of success for a church has been numerical growth. The larger the church, the more successful it is deemed to be. It is time for that perspective to change. Someone has said that God must love small churches because he made so many of them. There may be some truth in that statement. In every century and in all parts of the world today, small churches have predominated. This course is designed to provide a biblical foundation
for small churches.
