Leviticus as Story

Can Leviticus be part of your spiritual story?

It’s easy to place ourselves in certain parts of the biblical story, imagining ourselves at the feet of Jesus, tucked in the cave with an exhausted Elijah. These narratives make it easier to connect with the experiences of the biblical people and their experiences. But how can we immerse ourselves in the story of Leviticus?

Is there a way to see beyond the logistics of the law and into the story of Leviticus?

The Law as Story?

Seeing Leviticus as part of our spiritual story gives us a sense of continuity and connection with our ancestors in faith. By immersing ourselves in their story, we can better understand God’s heart, his vision for us, his people, and what it means for us to be image-bearers of God.

The Laws of Leviticus were not isolated from practical human experience. Rather, their details were given in the context of a grand story that recounts Israel’s formation from an oppressed group of slaves to a powerful “kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Ex. 19:6), among whom the deity dwelt (25:8). Divine laws addressed real life and were intended to shape its destiny with God. In this sense each law is a kind of distilled story.

Respond in paragraph format to the following prompt(s):
    • What is your story of parameters with God?
    • How have boundaries and correction from God helped you to look more like Christ and better represent God to the world?

I am really am enjoying this course and reflecting on God’s love and seeing Leviticus in a different lense. For me God has always showed parameters but as a normal kid we always want to find our own way. Through life I have come to the realization that God always wants the best for me. By setting parameters he is trying to save me from sorrow, disappointment and losing myself. The world has a different standard and when I step out of his boundaries into the world I have become so lost I didn’t hear his voice for a season. So thankful he is patient and kind.
