IntroductioN
A Clear View
When we’re reading Leviticus we need to clean our lenses and put Leviticus in its proper place!
Seeing Leviticus in its proper context helps understand the overarching story of God’s people, but especially how God trained the Israelites in the wilderness to understand all of life as worship. When we see Leviticus for what it really is, worship rather than narrative, it helps to ground our understanding of the whole Bible and place ourselves in the story.
"I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people."
Leviticus 26:12
So how does knowing Leviticus’s proper place change how we read the book?
The Center of the Pentateuch
Grounding Leviticus within the middle of the Pentateuch points us towards the importance of having the core values of the people and practices seen as part of the larger narrative of God’s work. As we observe and perhaps participate in this ‘worship service’, we can better understand the experience of God’s people as they seek to live in the presence of a Holy and loving God.
Consider the Following Questions:
- What has been my previous experience with Leviticus?
- What has appealed to me? Turned me away from the book?
- What are some questions I’d really like answered?
- What do I find particularly hard to understand/relate to in Leviticus?
- How highly would I rate Leviticus’s value in relation to other books of the Bible?
- What do I think the purpose of the book is?
