What is Self-Awareness and Self-Management?
"Almost all problems in the spiritual life stem from a lack of self-knowledge.” – St. Teresa of Avila, The Way of Perfection
Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklund define self-awareness as the idea that “at a given moment, people can focus attention on the self or on the external environment”. As Christians, becoming truly self-aware requires a movement of God in our lives, reconciling our behavior with our internal values.
How can our inner values and our behaviours align?
Are you ready and willing to see yourself how God sees you?
As we grow together in self-awareness and managing ourselves, if we are willing and attentive, we will see clear evidence of God’s love for us and Holy Spirit’s engagement in our lives. Together in Christ-centered spiritual friendships, we learn more about ourselves and grow deeper in relationship with God and others.
“Where we do not know ourselves and where we are blind, we cannot see God’s grace and love.” – Alice Fryling
“There is only one problem on which all my existence, my peace, my happiness depend: to discover myself in discovering God. If I find Him I will find myself and if I find my true self I will find Him.” – Thomas Merton

Think About It:
- Mandy explained sanctification as “the work of the Holy Spirit transforming us to be more and more like Christ [and] the people God intends us to be.” Have you thought much about sanctification before?
- When you think of your own growth in sanctification, do you feel you have a good understanding of how that process happens?
- Mandy says that, while sanctification is a work of the Holy Spirit, it also involves our engagement and is wrestled out both as individuals and with our community. Where do you see opportunities to engage with sanctification in your life, both as an individual and with your community?
