Jesus’
Threefold Office
Part Three
The Regal Task of Kingdom Leadership
What is the regal role of the Christian and pastor?
The Coming King of Zion
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.Zech 9:9-10b
In this fifth video, Nikolas concludes our first lesson on the biblical foundations for pastoring in the way of Jesus by modeling the threefold office of Christ the King.
The King
Christ as our King means we are kings under Him – or stewards. We exercise authority and care for one another. Any one of us in leadership has the calling to be bringers of peace and cultivators of shalom.
God appoints leaders in various roles, to exercise God-given authority which will bring God’s blessing to bear on His world.

Looking Back
Consider these questions before you finish this lesson:
- Which of these three functions do you feel most drawn towards?
- Why is it important that all three functions are integrated well in the pastor?
- What are the potential pitfalls or dangers when there is a priestly, prophetic or regal imbalance in the leadership or the pastor or the culture of the church?
Discussion reflection question (150-200 word paragraph for each question, please)
- As Pastors, we are called to live out the offices as fully and as integrated as we can. To do so is to seek to become more Christlike. Richard Mauw puts it this way:
- The ability to discern the concerns, desires, fears and hopes: … this is priestly. The capacity to shape and articulate a vision and goals for a people: this is prophetic. The ability to effectively facilitate movement from one to the other: this is the ruling (kingly) function.
You Did it!
