Pentecost After the Apostolic Era

Holy Spirit at Work

God's Spirit is still at work in our world

There has been evidence of the Holy Spirit poured out in all ages and times, at least somewhere in the body of Christ, since the time of the Apostles!

Healings, exorcisms, and validating signs and wonders continue to be experienced in the church. Just as miracles and wonders added to the credibility of the first-century apostles, so they continue to draw unbelievers into the Christian fold

After the Apostolic era, does it seem other Christians witnessed the outpouring of the Holy Spirit?

Even Augustine, who died a full 400 years after Christ and even today remains the most highly regarded Christian theologian of the early church, talked about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the reality of the spiritual gifts.  Through the middle ages, many well-respected Christian monks and mystics lived their Christian lives with this assumption as well. Even in the more recent centuries, just before the rise of “Pentecostalism” in the 20th century, history records many revivals that were a result of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and included the use of spiritual gifts and speaking in tongues.

Test Yourself

According to history, when was the major "silent age" where there were no evidences of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit within the Church?

Answer

There was no such silent age!

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit in even more now than in the past; hallelujah and glory be to God.

I think the thing that stands out to me the most from this overview is just how crazy it is that the Holy Spirit can empower people to speak to others in other languages. I don’t think we realize just how powerful God is and how he is able to do anything through the work of the Spirit! What it makes me think about God’s providence is how he wants us to be provided for as we go throughout our ministry. He doesn’t just leave us to our own strengths but wants to fully provide for us. God’s mission for the world is revealed in how he empowers people to share the gospel with those all around the world.

What stands out to me most. The words of Jesus himself : ” I tell you the truth , It is expedient for you that I go away; for unless I go away , the Comforter will not come unto you…” The Mission and plan of God from the beginning is to save a lost humanity. And it is only through the power of the Holy Spirit in us ,That we can preach, teach ,disciple men to come to the knowledge of Him!

He has never stop bringing people into His Family.

The Holy Spirit in His children, and with the evidence of speaking in an unknown language has shown thousands through the ages, His Power, Knowledge, and Love!

It spurs me on to press in for more. I’ve been a pentecostal follower of Jesus for basically my entire life, but it reminds me there’s no end to the infilling of the Spirit!
