Discover, Share, Obey

How do you change reading the Bible from being about acquiring information to receiving transformation?

I love the word “perspicuity.” It really just means clarity, but when used in the phrase “perspicuity of the Bible” it refers to the clarity and understandability of Scripture. Of course, not every word or passage of the Bible is clear. For centuries, the Church has continued to study and puzzle over some things in our holy book. However, the vast majority of both Old and New Testament are understandable to the reader as long as the translation is good.

Enter the Discover, Share, Obey Approach. This is a way of reading the Bible, acting on what we learn, and witnessing to those around us that relies on the perspicuity of Scripture. This is a tool you can use to run Bible studies for seekers or believers; a way to let God be the teacher using the inspired Word. You can think of it as instructions for a journey or training in orienteering. Once you internalize the instructions, the map and compass can take you the rest of the way.

So, here’s a “how-to” for leading any small group to encounter Jesus in the pages of the Bible.

Are you ready to try it yourself?

Now you have been exposed to the Discover, Share, Obey approach. Most of the topics in this course will give you an opportunity to read a passage of the Bible or learn a biblical principle and then act on it. It is through doing the word that we are transformed.

Just like a physical tool, the best way to get proficient at using this method is to practice. I suggest you gather a small group and practice a few times with them over a month and see how the rhythm of reading this way begins to change the way you live your faith.

Discover, Share, Obey is so easy and practical for anyone to apply. “Discover” is kind of an energizing word. It suggests a “pursuit,” “a quest” — coming to the Word completely open and with anticipation that something is going to happen. Meeting with God Himself. A blessing. “Share” is extending God’s blessing to others–an act of love and care. Honestly, I would say that “share” has the double blessing of allowing the Word to resonate beyond ourselves but also to resonate more deeply within us. “Obey” is intentionality. A conscious decision. Faith. Embracing God’s loving grace which continues to resonate and work within us. Of course, “Discover, Share, Obey” is a great way to engage with what the Holy Spirit is speaking to us through Scripture. It is devotional reading of Scripture, distinct from Bible study and careful exegesis (which can further nuance and deepen the act of “Discover”).

After trying the discover share obey approach I made some good observations.

I found that When I look at the Bible passage with simplicity in mind, it is often easy to find the truth.

I then take that simple truth and apply to my heart and then I ask the Lord to show me what to do with it.

I then ask the lord who can I share this Biblical truth with.

I then try to obey what the word says sometimes the change is immediate but sometimes it takes time.

I like how simple this approach works, it gives me time to think about the passage i’m reading and how i can turn it into action in my life.

I also like it that immediately after reading the Bible, the Holy Spirit inturn drops insight into the Word of God i just read.

After trying the Discover, Share, Obey approach a few times, what questions do you have, or what observations do you have about what works well with this approach?

Thank you for sharing this and it helps me grow deeper in the word of God.
We need to Discover what God really speaking to us and after that we are called to share, and as we share, and have knowledge and relation, because we love God , we must obey his word. not enough just to know the word of God, we must do the word of God if we are truly to love Him.
