Ripple Effects

What does Los Angeles have to do with Winnipeg?

The Pentecostal Movement that sparked in Kansas, Texas, and Los Angeles, quickly began catching fire around the globe. In this session, we will track the way revival travelled from Azusa Street in Los Angeles, through Chicago, to Winnipeg in a few short years.

In the video, watch for how these names connect: Seymour, Durham, Argue, Small.

How amazing is the spread of the Holy Spirit's work across countries!

One way to look at the spread of the Holy Spirit’s work from Azusa to ACOP is through these key figures: From William Seymour, to William Durham, to Andrew Argue, to Franklin Small. But Wes pointed out another significant aspect that paved the way for revival to spread: the seasons of prayer that preceded the revivals in each city and church.

What do you notice about the way the movement of the Holy Spirit literally moves across geography, as recounted in this video?

"Jesus should not be slighted… by the exaltation of the Holy Spirit and of the gifts of the Spirit. There seemed to be a great danger of losing sight of the fact that Jesus was all in all.... The Holy Spirit is given to show us the things of Christ. The work of calvary, the atonement, must be the center of our consideration. The Holy Spirit never draws our attention from Christ to himself, but rather reveals Christ in a fuller way. We are in the same danger today. ”

What’s common to these two quotes is the focus–Jesus Christ. These should remind us always that Jesus is the center of everything. Apart from Christ, all our knowledge about God, all amazing experiences, fellowship and teachings will continue to be the human ways to reach God (religion). I love it when Bartleman said, “The Holy Spirit never draws our attention from Christ to himself, but rather reveals Christ in a fuller way.” This should also be our aim–to focus on Jesus and never draw peoples’ attention to our wit and religious practices.

“For God so love the world that He gave His Son” Jesus is the center of it all. We can then experience Christ in a fuller way through the work and empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Both Bartleman and Argue have stated in their respective quotes here that Jesus is simply the One to focus on. The Holy Spirit is truly the Helper that Jesus had promised to send. He himself, continues to focus, and remind us to look to Jesus. The Holy Spirit’s power in action is to bring glory to God through the work of the Son.

Right! That last sentence is key.

It is almost like the Holy Spirit serves as a pair of glasses that help us focus on and see more of the glory of God through his son Jesus! Especially in Argue’s account of his 21 days of seeking God’s best, the nearness to the Holy Spirit allowed him to see Jesus’ glory. This sparks a longing in me to continually ask for more of the refreshing of the Spirit that I may see and know the glory of God in Jesus in a greater way.

Reading both of these quotes, I appreciate that both men identify that Jesus is the center. Speaking in tongues and being baptized by the Holy Spirit is a gift from God. I like that Argue mentioned seeing numbers of people being filled with the spirit deepened his hunger, because I find relevance in that. But I also appreciate that Bartleman is quick to make it clear that the moment you lose sight that, the Holy Spirit is a gift from Christ it is end game. The Holy Spirit is a wonderful example of all the amazing things Christ is capable of, it’s not The Holy Spirit on it’s own. It all comes back to Jesus!
