The White Paper on Human Sexuality

ACOP is responding to the changes in our culture and it is important that as our Canadian culture changes we may need to develop other white papers along the way to deal with new issues as they arise. The affirmation that we should love all people as ourselves is meaningful because the way that we are drawn to Jesus is the first time is through love. If we truly love others, then they will see the love of God through us and it opens the door for them to experience His love which is far greater than any love that can be found in our world.

I believe that it was important for ACOP to develop a white paper on human sexuality, as sexuality is seemingly more prevalent in our current culture than ever before, and therefore, something the Church will have to face.

I think the affirmation stating that we should love all people as ourselves stands out to me as being most meaningful. I also like the quote that states the importance of teaching with the heart of the Gospel and the heart of redemption and feel that the two are intrinsically linked.

A white paper on human sexuality is important for ACOP to have because it acts as a guideline of sorts for pastors and leaders in ACOP. having a source for ACOP leaders to refer to when addressing this topic will ensure that there is congruity with what is being taught and it is something leaders can be held accountable to. Of course, with every conversation a member of ACOP has regarding this topic, speaking with grace and truth is the of the upmost importance. We cannot water down the gospel and we must communicate with grace. I think the white paper is a good resource to help guide these conversations.

Loving others as we love ourselves is so important in this context especially. I know a lot of hurt can come from conversations about sexuality without that understanding. It is so meaningful to extend grace and love in these conversations because it can make a huge difference in someone feeling accepted or shunned by the church or even God.

It is important for the ACOP to develop a document on human sexuality as it is one of the most talked about and debated subjects of our time. As Wes mentioned, so much of human sexuality has become wrapped up in personal identity and as such become very wrapped up in the view and understanding of God. The clear but loving approach that is outlined in the white paper helps ACOP churches and members navigate a sensitive but important subject.
