Respond in paragraph format to the following prompt(s):

    • When it comes to statements of faith, why is it important to distinguish between core beliefs, doctrinal distinctives, personal beliefs and personal opinions?
    • How familiar are you with ACOP’s statement of faith (or another denomination’s)? Have you looked at the Narrative Commentary to help get a better sense of the doctrines expressed in the statement of faith?

Distinguishing between first-order beliefs and second (or third) order beliefs is helpful in that it gives clarity to those both within and outside of ACOP. It also helps others understand the distinctives and allows for productive discussion and debate. Finally, I think it also helps us recognize what issues are non-negotiable and which ones are okay for us as a fellowship to disagree on. We are going to have differences of opinion or nuance in our beliefs and theology, but this does not mean we cannot walk in relationship with one another. There are things we must be in agreement of to be Christians, but these items tend to be a much shorter list than we sometimes think.

It is so important to talk about the difference between 1st order and 2nd order and 3rd order beliefs, as we want to seek unity and not get caught up in disagreements over 2nd and 3rd order beliefs. Those beliefs are still important, but they cannot carry the same weight that we put on our first-order beliefs.

Distinguishing between core beliefs, doctrinal distinctives, personal beliefs, and personal opinions is crucial when it comes to statements of faith. Core beliefs are fundamental to the Christian faith, such as the Trinity and salvation through Jesus Christ. Doctrinal distinctives are specific interpretations or emphases that may vary between denominations or churches, such as baptism modes or eschatology. Personal beliefs and opinions, on the other hand, are individual perspectives that may not be essential to the faith.

I’m familiar with ACOP’s statement of faith, which outlines core beliefs and doctrinal distinctives. The Narrative Commentary provides valuable context and explanation, helping to clarify the meaning and significance of each doctrine. This resource enables a deeper understanding of ACOP’s theological stance and facilitates informed discussions.

By engaging with the Narrative Commentary, individuals can better comprehend the statement of faith, fostering unity and cooperation within the denomination while respecting diverse perspectives.

It’s important to understand the difference between “levels of conviction” about different things so that we can communicate and understand how easily we can connect with other believers. For example, if we cling to our personal opinion about the end times as a first-order belief, it communicates to other believers that fellowship will be challenging unless they agree with our perspective on all points. On the other hand, if we communicate that something like the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus as payment for our sins is merely a personal opinion, it would communicate a lack of safety in that community for the vast majority of Jesus followers that hold that as a non-negotiable.

I’m fairly familiar with the statement of Faith, and have taken some time to peruse the narrative commentary to get better understanding of ACOP’s perspective on some points.
