The two strategies talked about in this session are the addition strategy and the multiplication strategy. In addition, we disciple one person who disciples one person and so on. In multiplication we become a discipler of disciples. In the addition strategy, we reach a small number of people with the gospel whereas with multiplication, we can reach large numbers of disciples. I as one person will maybe only be physically able to disciple 3 people at a time, but if each person I disciple then disciples 3 people each, that’s nine people. And then if those 9 people each disciple 3 people that becomes 27 people. The number of people reached by multiplication can grow exponentially with very little additional effort on the part of any one person. I strongly believe that multiplication is a much more effective model for global growth.

Jesus, sent his disciples two by two and the great commission. Matt 28:18-20

When the Bible talks about people, it cares about numbers, because each number is a soul.

Multiplication, as possible, is always preferred, because more souls are getting connected to Jesus. The differences between Addition and Multiplication could be compared to the old saying of “give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day; teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime.” If we simply teach people about Jesus, they will be saved, and that’s amazing. If we teach them the full workings of Jesus and the life He invites us into, they will naturally share this good news with others, who will share it with others, causing a multiplication affect.

The addition stratgey is extremely limiting as if the maker of the disciples leaves or passes, the disciples are left floundering and there will be no new people being discipled. The multiplication strategy is the more biblical principle as we are all called to make disciples (that includes the people that we make disciples). This strategy has the potential for exponential growth, meaning that there are significantly more people getting to know Jesus, which is what this is all for.
