Respond in paragraph format to the following prompt:

    • In his Confessions, Augustine said: "It is not the impurity of food I fear, but that of uncontrolled desire" (Confessions, X, 31, 46). When it comes to fasting, what do you think is right about this quote? Is there anything wrong with it?

Controlled desires become the first victory of our spiritual battle; it is better to be ruled by the spirit than with our flesh.

I think the quote is good because the uncontrolled desires can apply to all things that take us away from spending time with Christ. And focusing on things like food that are healthy but become unbalanced when we are consumed by it- or over -eating – over indulging. Food becomes our greatest desire above all. Great to re-focus on Christ and filling ourselves with prayer and the word.
