What helped me do this is having great mentors in my life to re-focus me when the noisiness of the world drowns out the voice of Holy Spirit. To take time and take that step has been amazing as he wants to speak to all of us. Love those car rides or walks into nature to just listen to what he has to say – turn on that Holy Spirit radio turn it on loud. No I am not an expert – ha ha but having a beautiful learning journey.

@KarryMac I appreciate the playfulness in this answer. It is clear to me that your relationship with the Lord is very special to you.

I have learned to listen inwardly for the voice of the Holy Spirit. My experience of hearing His voice is often just like a thought that pops into my head. Sometimes its when I am thinking about something to do that may not be what He has planned for me. There is times when I feel the unction of the Holy Spirit to pray in tongues. Often its when I am praying for someone for a variety of reasons and Holy Spirit gives me the words to pray such that I haven’t had to think about the words to pray. What has helped me is to rely and trust in Christ that He will give me exactly what to pray. What has also helped me is not to have a preconceive idea of what words to pray but to listen and wait until the Spirit gives me the words.

@Connie Your answer reminds me of how so often the Holy Spirit speaks to us when we are pouring out for the sake of others. Isn’t it true that we need more help from the Lord when we are giving than when we are receiving?
