Gratitude Prayer Model

“…enter His gates with thanksgiving…” Ps. 100:4

Let’s look at a prayer tool we can use to help facilitate prayer. If you’re like me, you’d say, “Yes, I know I am to pray, but how do I do it?” It’s that question word, ‘how’ that messes it up. AND it’s important since we want prayer to work! I have been using a three step process (tool) for many years in prayer and since it works, I keep using it. I call it my ‘gratitude model’. In this session we look at three different ways we can turn the Bible into a living conversation.

A thankful, grateful heart will ‘move’ the heart of God.

“Gratitude is an offering precious in the sight of God, and it is one that the poorest of us can make and be not poorer but richer for having made it.”

Gratitude in Everything?

“God says to give thanks in everything. That doesn’t mean you need to give thanks FOR everything. You don’t need to give thanks FOR that bad day. Or FOR that bad relationship. Or being passed over at work. Financial hardship. Whatever it is – you are not to give thanks FOR the difficulties, but rather IN the difficulties. That is a very important distinction, and one I think we often miss. Giving thanks IN everything shows a heart of faith that God is bigger than the difficulties and that He can use them, if you approach Him with the right heart and spirit, for your good and His glory.”

Respond to the following prayer exercise in paragraph format:

Now that you know how to use this model, it’s time to try it; take it for a test spin! Remember the different steps: (1) gratitude; (2) agreement; (3) ask for more!

    1. Use a favourite verse of your own or Jn. 15: 9 just to get started. Journal anything you hear from Father God (I like to call him Dad). What do you feel? Did he say anything to you?
    2. Remember to ask for more revelation (step 3). What does Father God show you or say to you?
    3. Take what you have heard from this prayer time and consider how you would give it away to someone else. How would you share what you have heard in order to encourage others?

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now reminder in my love.” John 15:9

Thank you, Abba, that Your Word is True and every man a liar. Thank you that You love me as You love Jesus!! Thank you that You don’t hide Your love for me, but You make it known it to me. When I read this and think about it, it seems impossible to me, yet here is the Truth of it in Your Word. Thank you for Your abundant love that I do not deserve.

I agree with Your Word. I agree that You do love me AS MUCH AS, IN THE SAME WAY, as You love Jesus. How precious is this Word to me!

Abba, show me more of the love You have for me and for others. May You show me more and may I live and move and have my being in Your love.

The love that God has for me is dependant on God, who is Love, not on my ability to “be” loveable. The love of God is more than an emotion. My love is emotional, that is I “feel” love. God’s love is not limited to an emotion. God IS Love! In this way, God’s love is poured into my heart (Romans 5:5) through the Holy Spirit.

It is the easiest thing in the world to drift away from the reality that God loves us in the same way He loves Jesus. How encouraging would it be just to text the simplicity of this Truth to someone today.

“God the Father loves you as much as He loves Jesus!”
