1. The New Testament scholar David Moffitt points out that even though Hebrews doesn’t really use the vocabulary of “resurrection” or “ascension,” the fact of Jesus’s resurrection and ascension is the basis for a lot of what the epistle talks about. Because of Jesus’s resurrection and ascension, he now intercedes for us and serves as high priest in the heavenly sanctuary. So really Hebrews is not only concerned with what Jesus has done, but what he is doing. Do you think much about what Jesus is doing? How does thinking of Jesus as intercessor and high priest impact your faith? ( If this correctly understands that the Hebrew’s understand Jesus as a high priest and sacrifice, it further means that Jesus’ sacrifice cannot be reduced to his death, resurrection, ascension, or event presented to heaven, or event of heaven session.)
2. Sometimes Christians ignore the Old Testament. Maybe they find it boring or don’t think it’s relevant. In this course, we’ve tried to understand the Bible as one big narrative, reading the New Testament as the continuing story of the Old Testament. Hebrews is a book that draws us into this big story. How has Hebrews helped you understand the Old Testament? Or how has the Old Testament helped you understand Hebrews? ( The Bible is a great story, that is, the story of Jesus. If you don’t understand this core truth, you’ll miss the point of the Bible.)
