Read Matthew 3:13 – 4:11 using the Discover, Share, Obey approach. Pay specific attention to what this passage might teach you about fasting. Consider how you will act on the insights the Holy Spirit provides and who you will share with. Share something from your reflections here in a paragraph.

Something that spoke to me in this passage is that Jesus didn’t just go to the desert on his own accord, the Spirit led him out there for a specific reason. I think this is important to remember so that fasting doesn’t just become a habit or something you do just because it’s on the “Christian to-do list.” Fasting needs to have a purpose. Whether it’s because you want to grow closer to Christ or because He calls you to it to teach you something; it’s not something that should be done lightly and without forethought.

@JWasmuth Thanks for sharing. You are right, fasting should have a purpose, especially when looking at this passage. At the same time, it is probably also true that often people are called to fast without being sure why. If this is a subject you would like more training on, the ECO course on fasting has lots of further instruction on this.

This is such a wonderful passage. It truly shows the devils determination to get us to fall (especially Jesus). He tried 3 times and Jesus responded with scripture each time. Jesus used the sword of the Spirit (as talked about in Ephesians 6:17). Which is something that we should do, protect ourselves with the Word of God. cover ourselves with the truth! fasting is also going to make us weak, that is why satan tried to tempt Jesus because he knew that Jesus was fasting and was potentially weak. However, in a worldly way fasting makes us weak but in a Spiritual way it makes us strong because when we rely on the Lord He gives us that strength and renews us. He provides us with all the equipment we need to fight off any temptation.

A good thing about God is that everything God does is for a reason.

Fasting and Vigil also should have a purpose, especially looking at the study, and furthermore, it should be on Christians to-do list.

In order to grow closer to Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
