  • Lesson 7 – The Vocal Gifts

Have you spoken in tongues? Can you determine whether you received tongues for devotional or congregational use? How could you tell the difference?

If you do not speak in tongues, is this a gift you want to receive? If you do, how can you ask for this gift in your own context?

Reflect on these questions and respond in the discussion.

I speak in devotional tongues and have heard congregational tongues. I however have not spoken in congregational tongues as I recall nor have I had the interpretation of this gift. I know that I pray in tongues when praying for people and give them what I heard from the Lord but I however don’t think that I’m interpreting the tongues but may be giving them a word of knowledge or exhortation. I will need to pray for that gift and step out in faith when or if the Holy Spirit moves on me in that gift.

Thanks @Connie for sharing your personal experience. It sounds like you have some experience with speaking in tongues personally, but that you want to grow in the interpretation or group experience of tongues speaking. God loves it when we ask for these kinds of gifts in faith! Just keep your focus on the giver, not the gifts.

      God bless you today!

Yes I speak in tongues and mostly devotional. There is an inward move of the Holy Spirit and a prompting when tongues are congregational. I am still learning to understand how to tell the difference.

@VGaffney it be really hard to discern whether a message in tongues is for your own private edification or for the group. We learn the difference by trusting the Holy Spirit’s leading and obeying the nudges we feel. If it turns out that someone gives a translation to the word of tongues, we can gain confidence that the word was for the group. I don’t know if this can be fully learned without stepping out in obedience.

I have spoken in tongues. I know that some of the tongues I have are for personal edification. One time at Strasbourg Alliance Church I was praying in the back during an evening service and I felt some tongues come to me that I can’t remember. I am pretty sure it was an in the moment congregational kind of tongues. It was very cool.

I have not spoken in tongues yet.

I sincerely want to receive this gift.

I will ask for this gift through prayers, and the Holy Spirit, the Giver of good gifts.
